Attenuation Circuit’s Reissues Series provides the possibility to make available again the first releases by label founder Sascha Stadlmeier. The second instalment of a trilogy with completely new cover art is the second album by his project Dependenz, which preceded his current incarnation as EMERGE. Originally released in 2001, the CD features nine tracks, each based on a different type of found everyday sounds that are processed, especially reverberated, to create imaginary echo chambers of unusual sonic events. The conceptual rigour of basing each new composition on a different set of source sounds is an aesthetic strategy that has since been refined in the work of EMERGE. The use of found sounds in music has been serving different aesthetic ends since 1948. While French musique concrète aimed at expanding the repertoire of possible sounds available to composers of music, other movements saw found „noises“ as more of an anti-musical critique of commodified music, an ear-cleaning antidote to listening habits conditioned by the entertainment industry. This album draws on both strategies. Sometimes, the found sounds are used quite referentially, only slightly blurred by lo-fi recording techniques that draw attention to their artificial character, but still blurred to enough to make their „content“ sufficiently ambiguous to make listeners ask themselves if they’re actually hearing what they think they hear. On a compositional level parallel to this ‚critical‘ use of sounds, however, reverb and echo effects are used to distill overtone structures of a surprisingly pure, yet vaguely ghostly character from the raw material, a process that resembles Alvin Lucier’s transformation of language into pure sound through spatial acoustics in „I Am Sitting in a Room“.
